Post Imperial maps of the world are being drawn up using the alleyways and rat runs ignored by empire’s former hubris. Now, using modern technologies, artists are able to overlay their maps over the standard projection, revealing an ocean of ignorance and bliss.

Tracing Mobility, the first of Radiator’s three international symposia, examines the emergence of a new art space, a space born out of the technology used to control and divide society. Taking place at Nottingham Contemporary on Saturday 15 May to coincide with the Uneven Geographies exhibition.

“Cosmopolitanism is today one of the most important ways of making sense of the contemporary world” (Delanty, 2009)

Abstract:

Cosmopolitanism, as in the above quote by Gerard Delanty, is indeed the dominant way of theorizing a contemporary consciousness of global reach. What Ulrich Beck calls ‘the cosmopolitan moment of world risk society’ (Beck 2006, 2009), is used as a framework to conceptualise social and material processes across the world (Hulme 2009; Tyfield and Urry, 2009).
And although it is consistently reiterated that the term is European in origin and therefore only ever partially valid in other contexts, it is exported nevertheless, as it is the traditional Western way of looking beyond its own boundaries.
To critically explore the historicity of cosmopolitanism and the limits of its applicability today, the typical genealogy given in the chapter ‘The rise and decline of classical cosmopolitanism’ from ‘Cosmopolitan Imagination’ (Delanty 2009), can be read against Dussel’s critique of a Eurocentric development narrative in ‘Europe, Modernity and Eurocentrism’.

SELF PORTRAIT is a multi-disciplinary project combining sociology of bioscience with identity expression through art.

Its aim is to examine population categorisations and classifications currently applied in bioscience, with a focus on ‘mixed-race’, ’other’ or similar designations inferring a post-colonial, multicultural identity.
To that end the genome of the artist – Robin Bhattacharya – is to be sequenced and mapped using different marker categorisations. Their applicability can then be evaluated against the specific sample, which is multi-national/ethnic and has a well-documented genealogy.

The different types of classifying are to be made ‘visible’ using information visualisation. The result of which will be an artefact ‘representing’ the different possible populations making up the artists cultural identity.

This SELF PORTRAIT of the artist Robin Bhattacharya will then be presented as an installation in a touring exhibition at various international art spaces. (Dates and locations forthcoming)

*Lately I’ve been reading ‘The Many-Headed Hydra’ by Linnebaugh and Reddicker.
And today an article my father sent me, from the NZZ of 29 June 2009 entitled ‘Die Fortschreibung einer Legende’ by Michael Kempe… also about piracy.

Additionally, last sunday the pirate party of Switzerland was founded in Zürich – even though ‘true’ pirates naturally do not join a ‘party’, but simply join the crew by being on board.

‘Jolly Roger’ is the name of all skull-and-bones pirate flags in general. They signify to the other the possibility of surrender and to join, to save one’s own life.
This in contrast to the (blood-)red flag, which symbolises certain death for all on the hostile ship.

The one raised by me on Lake Zürich aboard the Gypsy -skull above crossed bones- is specifically the flag of captain Edward England, who died for being too nice… It is from a gift-shop at the Europa-Park, Rust.
